Hattingdon® is a hat wearing, smile making cartoon horse with hat-titude. The first Hattingdon® was designed during the 2007 Christmas holidays by the series' sole creator, Vivian Grant Farrell.
Since then Mrs Farrell has created 100s of hats for the Hattingdon® family of cartoon horses which includes Hattingdon® herself, and her cousins the Hattingdon-Greys.
Vivian Grant Farrell (or Mrs Farrell as she is called), the creator and owner of all things Hattingdon®, came up with the Hattingdon® design concept in 2007 when she suddenly found herself spending Christmas alone in Washington DC.
Mrs Farrell decided to put her time to good use to see if she could make something for kids for her horse charity's gift shop.
She opened up Photoshop and waited for inspiration. And finally it came!
After she layered some shapes together Mrs Farrell found she had formed a horse. He was a bit plain so she decided to dress him up — adding a sideways ballcap, a bit of bling and some fierce sunglasses. She called him Curtis.
That's how Curtis Hattingdon — aka H. Daddy or Horse Daddy — the first ever Hattingdon® Mrs Farrell created — came to be.
Everyone at the horse charity loved Curtis, but Mrs Farrell was a bit nervous about what sort of reception he would receive by the public.
Was the design good enough? Professional enough? She had never tried anything quite like this, and her Photoshop skills were fledgling at best.
So the group agreed to put Curtis in the horse charity's online gift shop in January of the coming New Year to see what happened. To everyone's delight Curtis was an immediate hit.
Mrs Farrell's colleagues encouraged her to design more, saying surely she wasn't going to stop with Curtis.
However, Mrs Farrell figured she'd had beginner's luck with Curtis, and didn't know if she could even design another one.
After thinking it over, she decided the best and simplest way to go forward was to expand on what she knew how to do, and began creating what later became a series, using the Curtis design as a sort of model, or template.
For her second Hattingdon® Mrs Farrell made a female version, changing the cartoon's colour to brown and adding big eyes with long, luxurious lashes.
For the hat she chose a large picture hat in fashion house pink. Mrs Farrell called her second design, Harper. She added the mane to Hattingdon several yearslater.
Next up Mrs Farrell created her version of a classic hat silhouette in basic black. It features a rounded crown and medium brim with tapered edges. She called the design Eve.
Using the Eve design as a template,Mrs Farrell produced an entire line of classic hats in a wide variety of colours and embellishments like the ones below. During those early years these designs were wildly popular. They still have a big following today.
Ideas continued to flow, with Mrs Farrell creating a cornucopia of hats for Hattingdon® including ballcaps, berets, fashion hats, mod caps, turbans, novelty hats and more.
Hattingdon® appeals to an international audience which includes the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Europe, Sweden, Switzerland,Japan and India.
